Changing original font on the Droid

Teaser ;)

You have 2 basic requirements for this “hack”
1. Phone MUST be ROOTED!!!
2. MUST be a True Type font or your phone won’t read it and you’ll have a $500 PaperWeight =D

Disclaimer: If you don’t understand these simple steps, you should NOT be messing with your phone. They are self explanatory and I will not be held responsible for your bricked phone.

Alright, let’s get to the fun stuff now :)
1. Create a folder in the SD card ROOT folder, I just used “new_font”
2. Copy the font you want to use to that folder. (I recommend using a font that has “normal” and “bold” types)
3. Name the “normal” font DroidSans.ttf and the “bold” font DroidSans.ttf
4. Create a folder to store the stock font, I named mine “orig_font”
5. Using Terminal on your phone do the following:

su
mount -o remount /dev/mtdblock4 /system
cat /system/fonts/DroidSans.ttf > /sdcard/orig_font/DroidSans.ttf
cat /system/fonts/DroidSans-Bold.ttf > /sdcard/orig_font/DroidSans-Bold.ttf
cat /sdcard/new_font/DroidSans.ttf > /system/fonts/DroidSans.ttf
cat /sdcard/new_font/DroidSans-Bold.ttf > /system/fonts/DroidSans-Bold.ttf
mount -o ro,remount /dev/mtdblock4 /system
sync
reboot

6. You should now have new font on your phone :)

Tethering Droid on Mac via USB

Well some people don’t want to pay for PDANet or BBAC with Verizon, this should solve those problems for the most part. It’s simple and straight to the point, if you don’t understand it…you SHOULDN’T be messing with your phone anyway…

Disclaimer: As ALWAYS, I am NOT responsible if you BRICK your phone. You use these tutorials knowing you MIGHT brick your phone and have a $500 paperweight =D

1. Go to Android Market and Download free ProxoID app

2. Visit Android SDK site and Install the Mac SDK.

3. Start Proxoid on your Droid. (Simple to use and remember port 8080)

4. From Terminal, Run “adb forward tcp:8080 tcp:8080″ (without the quotes)

5. Setup your browser to run from proxy on port 8080

6. Enjoy USB Tethering ;)

Removing Default Apps on Droid

I for one have ZERO use for a lot of the stock apps that come with the phone and they are just a pain to look at and they take up space. This method will “remove” them from the OS installed, but not from the System hard drive, it’s easier to just rename them and get them back later instead of accidentally removing something that could make your phone unusable later on.

This REQUIRES your phone to be ROOTED, you will also need a terminal app. They have a bunch of free ones in the Android Market, just download Android Terminal; it’s free and has a simple UI.

Open Android Terminal, type su and press enter; this will give you access to modify the OS and remove pre-installed apps.

Now just follow the code to remove what you want, you can do them all at once or in any order.

DON’T USE ANYTHING INSIDE THE PARENTHESIS AFTER EACH FILE, I AM JUST TELLING YOU WHAT EACH ONE DOES!!!!!

If there is anything else you want remove and don’t know the app name, let me know 0mieTech@gmail.com and ill tell you how to remove it ;)

su

mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system

cd /system/app

mv Email.apk Email.bak (Default Email App)

mv VVMStub.apk VVMStub.bak (Visual Voicemail App)

mv com.amazon.mp3.apk com.amazon.mp3.bak (Amazon mp3 Store App)

mv CorpCal.apk CorpCal.bak (Corporate Calendar App)

mv Facebook.apk Facebook.bak (Facebook App)

mount -o ro,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system

sync

reboot your phone

Droid does ROOT!!!

This should NOT be attempted if you aren’t comfortable messing with your phone. It requires messing with UNOFFICIAL patches and if done wrong it WILL turn your phone into a $500 paperweight =D

What is ROOTING you ask?
Well simple, it’s messing with phone OS to install third-party apps not approved into the Android Market. If you’ve ever heard of a “jailbreak” for the iPhone, this is basically the same thing, but for Android devices. You can add more functionality to your phone by ROOTING it. Here I will explain how to ROOT your phone.

Disclaimer: If you don’t understand these simple steps, you should NOT be messing with your phone. They are self explanitory and I will not be held responsible for your bricked phone.

1. Download root_update.zip from MegaUpload
2. Turn on Mass Storage on your phone
3. Transfer and place root_update.zip in your microSD card root folder, REMEMBER to rename root_update.zip to just update.zip (Main Directory)
4. Turn off handset
5. Turn on handset and hold X key on your keyboard
6. You will now see an exclamation mark (!) with a triangle around it
7. Hit volume up key and lightly press camera button
8. Scroll down to apply update and hit ok on your keyboard
9. You will see the progress bar move until update is applied
10. Download Terminal Emulator from Market
11. Type su and hit enter (SU: Super User, it’s like Admin on Windows ;) lol)
12. You should have an icon called Superuser Permissions, that’s how you know you’re ROOTED =D

Non OTA 2.0.1 Droid Update

Many of you have been waiting on the Droid update that Verizon/Motorola released in small numbers to it’s subscribers. It has many bug fixes and should slowly get to all ~1 million users by years end.

Disclaimer: Those are predicted handsets sold by years end since it’s release in early November.

If you haven’t gotten the update and don’t mind taking a few steps to do this yourself, by all means do it.

It’s VERY simple. I will outline the steps here for you.

1. Download update.zip from MegaUpload
2. Turn on Mass Storage on your phone
3. Transfer and place update.zip in your microSD card root folder (Main Directory)
10. Your phone will now restart and you will have applied the ESD56 maintainence update.
11. To verify go to Setting—>About Phone—>Firmware Version 2.0.1 and Build Number ESD56

Disclaimer: If you don’t understand these simple steps, you should NOT be messing with your phone. They are self explanitory and I will not be held responsible for your bricked phone.

P.S. This was just a minor maintainence release to address some bugs. There should be “MAJOR” update

January 17th 2010. If I were a guessing man I’d say it was the 2.1 OS, but take that with a grain of salt ;)

Gmail Wireless Contact Sync Using BIS 2.8

Seems a lot of people are having issues using the new BIS 2.8 feature of Gmail Wireless Contact Sync, hopefully this simple tutorial will help you out. It’s one of the easiest things to do and seems NOBODY can get it.

1.) Go to Email Setup and Login

2.) Select Email Account you want to Sync

3.) Scroll down to Synchronization Options, check the Contacts box and hit save

4.) You will now see Enterprise Activation (Note you will see an icon on your Home Screen that says “Activation”) Once that is done you will see “Activation Complete” on Home Screen pop up.

NOTE IF YOU DO NOT SEE THE ENTERPRISE ACTIVATION MESSAGE AFTER YOU SAVE SYNC CONTACT IN EMAIL SETTINGS IT WILL NOT WORK, JUST DELETE THE ACCOUNT AND START FROM SCRATCH. I DID NOT HAVE TO DO THIS, BUT BOTH METHODS WORKED FOR ME.

5.) Now to select which Contact to Sync go to Contacts app, hit BB key Options

6.) You will now see your Email Accounts show up, select the one you need to Sync.

7.) Wireless Synchronization “Yes” hit save and you’re all set =)

8.) You’re all complete…if that doesn’t work, delete the account and add it. You will see this after adding your account:
